How to remove a background from a photo
- Pick the mode: People for portraits, Products and objects for everything else.
- Choose a photo, drag it in, or paste it from your clipboard.
- Wait a moment. The first time, your browser downloads the AI model. After that it's quick.
- Pick a new background: transparent, white, black or any colour.
- Download a PNG (keeps transparency) or a JPG (smaller, solid background).
Tips for a cleaner cut-out
- Contrast helps. A subject that stands out from the background gives sharper edges.
- Good light, sharp focus. Blurry edges and dark shadows are harder to separate.
- Fill the frame. A small product in a big room is harder than a close-up.
- Hair and fur are the hardest part. People mode is tuned for hair.

FAQ
Common questions
Is this background remover really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you process. The AI runs on your own device, so it costs us nothing per photo.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photo is processed inside your browser and never sent to us or anyone else. The only download is the AI model itself, which your browser fetches once from Hugging Face and then keeps in its cache.
Why does the first photo take longer?
The first time, your browser downloads the AI model (between about 44 MB and 224 MB, depending on the mode and your device). After that it is cached, so the next photos are much faster.
Which mode should I choose?
"People" is tuned for portraits, headshots and selfies and is the smaller download. "Products and objects" handles products, logos, pets and other things, with finer edges, but it is a bigger download and works best on a computer with a modern browser.
Can I get a white background for Amazon or other marketplaces?
Yes. After the background is removed, choose White and download a JPG. Amazon, for example, asks for a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) on the main product image.
Which AI models does it use?
Two open-source models: ormbg (Apache 2.0 licence) for people, and BiRefNet lite (MIT licence) for products and objects. Both run with the open-source Transformers.js library.
