Tips for images that perform

  • Portrait (4:5) takes more screen space in Instagram and Facebook feeds than square or landscape.
  • Keep text and faces away from the edges of Stories, Reels and TikToks, where buttons and captions sit.
  • Use the same image across platforms with a different crop for each, rather than one size everywhere.

FAQ

Common questions

What size should an Instagram post be?

Instagram uploads photos at up to 1080 pixels wide. Common sizes are 1080 × 1080 (square), 1080 × 1350 (portrait, 4:5) and 1080 × 566 (landscape, 1.91:1). Stories and Reels use 1080 × 1920 (9:16).

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

1280 × 720 pixels (16:9) is the standard recommendation, with a minimum width of 640 pixels.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is resized inside your browser and never leaves your device.

What is the difference between crop and fit?

Crop fills the whole size and trims the edges that do not fit. Fit keeps the whole image and adds a background colour around it.

Do these sizes ever change?

Yes. Platforms update their recommendations from time to time, so check the platform's own help pages before a big campaign. These are the commonly recommended sizes as of 2026.
